The COVID-19 pandemic has already had some effect on how people are living and working within Australian cities, but which impacts are temporary and which are more permanent remains to be seen.

The Australian Government’s Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs has released its report from the ‘Inquiry into the adequacy of Newstart and related payments and alternative mechanisms to determine the level of income support payments in Australia’. The report made 27 recommendations in total and proposed a number of important recommendations in relation to housing welfare programs.

Even though some Australian states and territories are reducing the rules for people to quarantine themselves at home, the COVID-19 pandemic is revealing just how liveable, or otherwise, our homes and cities actually are.
